Calico Bass Fishing San Clemente Island

Calico Bass Fishing San Clemente Island

The happiest place in SoCal is up for debate, for some its an amusement park but for serious bass anglers it’s San Clemente Island. Depending on the operations schedule for the US Navy it is only open during short periods of time for angling. The Island is roughly 59 miles from San Pedro but is home to some of the best fishing in SoCal. On a recent outing with Capt. Ben Florentino of Coastal Charters, we caught and released numerous calico bass that were caught on  his 2510 Bay Ranger Boat powered by a Mercury Marine 300hp Verado outfitted with the latest in Motor Guide and Lowrance electronics.

Fishing various set ups, we fished the latest in Shimano and G.Loomis, I was fishing a G.Loomis SWBR 956C with 65 and 80 pound Maxcuatro with Seaguar 40 – 50 pound STS Fluorocarbon Leader most of the day. Fishing Weedless MC Swimbaits and Trokar 9/0 Kelp Trick Hooks paid dividends in the heavy kelp forests that surround San Clemente Island. Fishing custom rip baits from was extremely effective for both Calico Bass and Yellowtail.

Fishing a Alabama Rig was the most effective technique of the day, yielding many double and triple hook ups during the day on lighter natural like color Big Hammer Swimbaits in both shallow and deep water.
